The answer changes a lot from one neighborhood to the next, because dining in the historic center, on a Vedado street or in Miramar, where places are more spread out and usually mean getting a ride, are three different experiences.

This guide explains where to eat cheap in Havana, area by area, and how budget food works in practice: paladares (privately run restaurants) serving Cuban home cooking, cafeterías, street windows, takeaway cajitas, the breakfast at your house and the difference between paying in dollars or in Cuban pesos (CUP). We only name places for which we found signs of activity in 2025 and 2026, and we tell you clearly when we could not confirm any.

One warning first: in Cuba, places open, close and change their menus very often, and blackouts and supply shortages make it worse. Treat this list as a starting point and always check with your host whether the place is open and what it has today.

How to eat cheap in Havana

Cuban home cooking and daily specials

The cheapest option is usually simple Cuban home cooking: rice, beans or potaje (bean stew), some protein and starchy sides. A Cuban news outlet reported in March 2026 that the cheapest lunch in the city was a full meal from a street stall on Reina Street (rice, potaje, a fried egg, salad and boiled starchy vegetables) for about 500 CUP, which at the time was equal to one US dollar. This is a reference from a single stall aimed at residents, not a tourist price, and with inflation it may have changed.

Cafeterías, windows and cajitas

Cafeterías: they serve sandwiches, pizzas, burgers and breakfasts. They tend to be cheaper than a paladar and are almost always paid for in cash.

Windows (ventanas): small counters at the window of a home, selling pizza, sandwiches or croquettes. According to 2026 guides, there is often no written menu, so it is best to ask the price before ordering.

Cajitas: takeaway food packed in a box, which many private businesses prepare to order. We found no reliable figure for tourists, so ask the price at each place.

Rice, starchy sides and a protein: the base of almost any Cuban meal.

Mipymes, state-run places and the breakfast at your house

Paladares and mipymes (small private businesses) usually offer better food than state-run restaurants, though at a slightly higher price. The Cuban press in 2026 reports price rises at private businesses and inspections with temporary closures, another reason why the offering changes from one month to the next.

Many casas particulares offer breakfast and sometimes dinner, normally as an extra. Ask before booking whether it is included or paid separately, and what it consists of. It is a convenient way to cover the first meal of the day and to have a plan B when the power goes out.

Old Havana: Cuban food near the squares

In the historic center there are plenty of restaurants aimed at tourists, and prices reflect it. Even so, these two places have recent activity and budget or mid-range prices:

Paladar Doña Eutimia (callejón del Chorro 60-C, next to Plaza de la Catedral): traditional Cuban cooking, with ropa vieja (shredded beef stew), black beans and picadillo (seasoned ground beef). A July 2025 guide puts it at roughly 8 to 15 USD per person, an approximate figure. There is a line, so it is best to book through your host.

Restaurant Van Van (San Juan de Dios 58): a small place serving Cuban and Caribbean food, listed among the budget options on Tripadvisor in 2026, with traveler reviews from February to June 2026.

Fresh fruit from street stalls rounds out any cheap meal.

If you are staying here, see our casas particulares in Old Havana.

Centro Habana: more neighborhood food

Guides usually point to Centro Habana as the area where it is easiest to find affordable local food, with cafeterías, windows and small places along everyday streets. In this guide we do not name any place in Centro Habana because we could not confirm from 2025 or 2026 reviews that any of the budget ones is still open. Your host will know which windows and cafeterías are working this week.

Vedado: from neighborhood spots to mid-range paladares

Vedado offers a mix of neighborhood cafeterías and somewhat more polished paladares. The only place we could confirm with recent activity is mid-range, not cheap:

Casa Mía Paladar (1ra Street no. 103, between C and D): Cuban and international food with a terrace. It has traveler reviews on Tripadvisor from January, May and June 2026, and a July 2026 listing says its prices are somewhat above the average for paladares. Keep it for a special meal, not for every day.

For the rest of Vedado, we recommend asking your host about the corner cafetería or pizzeria. Our guide to Vedado or Old Havana explains what daily life is like in each neighborhood, and here are our casas particulares in Vedado.

Miramar and Playas del Este: ask before heading out

In Miramar, places are more spread out and many are mid-range or high-end. We found no budget place with signs of activity in 2025 or 2026 that we can recommend with confidence, and the same goes for the areas near the beach. Here it makes more sense to count on the breakfast and dinner at your house and to ask your host about the options nearby. You can see the casas particulares in Havana.

Dollars, pesos and cards: how to pay

Since June 2026, Visa and Mastercard are suspended in Cuba: only cash, domestic prepaid cards and international UnionPay and Mir cards remain. In practice, pay in cash everywhere. We explain how much to bring and in which currency in what currency to bring to Cuba and in how much cash to bring.

Some places list their menu in dollars and others in CUP. Sources disagree on which works out better: some say the peso price is always lower, others that paying in dollars is better because the place’s exchange rate is unfavorable. Ask which currency the menu is in, work out the bill at the day’s exchange rate and bring small bills, because change is scarce. In March 2026, the dollar on the informal market was above 500 CUP, but that value moves every week.

The tip, according to 2026 guides, is usually 10% at restaurants with table service; check whether the bill already includes it.

Blackouts and kitchens: what to expect

Cuba is going through an energy crisis, with long blackouts in Havana and fuel shortages. For anyone eating out, this means reduced menus, dishes that run out and places that close earlier than usual. Recent guides warn that the menu changes depending on what is available, even at well-known paladares.

In May 2026 the state company Palmares announced that its restaurants would deliver prepared food to Havana neighborhoods because of the energy crisis, without giving prices or specific locations. If a blackout affects you, keep the breakfast at your house in mind and ask your host whether the home has backup power for cooking and for water.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to eat cheap in Havana?

It depends on the type of place and the currency. A local stall sold a full lunch for about 500 CUP (close to one dollar) in March 2026, but that is a price for residents. At a paladar prices are quite a bit higher and rise with inflation: confirm them before ordering.

Can you pay by card at paladares?

Do not count on it. Since June 2026 Visa and Mastercard are suspended throughout Cuba, and only UnionPay and Mir work. Bring cash.

Is it better to pay in dollars or in Cuban pesos?

Sources disagree. Ask which currency the menu is in, calculate at the day’s exchange rate and choose the cheaper option for you. Bring small bills.

What is a cajita and where do you buy one?

It is prepared food to take away, served in a box. Many private businesses sell it to order. We found no reliable figure for tourists, so ask the price on the spot.

Can you have breakfast at the casa particular?

Almost always, as an extra service. Ask before booking whether it is included or paid separately, and what it consists of.

Are paladares still open during blackouts?

Many stay open, but with shorter menus and changing hours. Check with your host in the morning whether the place is open and whether it has what you want to order.

Eat well and book in the area that suits you

Eating cheap in Havana is a matter of combining the breakfast at your house, the odd neighborhood cafetería or window and a paladar now and then, always with cash and with room for last-minute changes. If you have not yet chosen where to stay, see our neighborhood comparison or write to us: we help you choose and check with the host, for example whether they offer breakfast or dinner.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "@id": "https://encuba.net/en/cheap-eats-havana/#faq",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "How much does it cost to eat cheap in Havana?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "It depends on the type of place and the currency.
